Cornpone Populism and Epidemic Stupidity
I do not understand why our ‘leaders’ — at local, state, and national levels — won’t just make wearing masks in public mandatory, as in, wear a fucking mask or get arrested. It’s exhausting watching all these faint-hearted politicians wring their hands as they worry about upsetting someone’s archaic notion of negative liberty.
Every nation in every age has had a segment of the population that is basically and fundamentally ignorant — you know the type, people that were convinced that Bush planted thermite at the base of the World Trade Center or those who believed Obama was born in Africa. There isn’t a way to reason with imbeciles and the health and welfare of our citizens shouldn’t be predicated on the social philosophies of the dimwitted.
In a different time under capable leadership, we’d declare a war on the pandemic and marshal all our resources as a nation toward the common goal of defeating COVID-19. That’s what an enlightened people would do — transcend political divides and make reasonable decisions to overcome a common challenge. Future historians would write about those ‘six months in 2020’ when America reasserted itself as a capable nation. But no, we’re in an era of cornpone populism and epidemic stupidity.
